It has been fifty years since the landmark Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade (1973) temporarily guaranteed a women's right to seek an abortion. BWAF and ArchiteXX present the first in a series of joint panel discussions on how reproductive rights legislation impacts the design industry. Following the recent Supreme Court case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, our two organizations will present a discussion of the ramifications of this decision for designers and design firms, and propose how we can respond as individuals and as a group. First, Lori Brown, FAIA, Professor, Syracuse University School of Architecture, will place the particular issue of women’s health in the context of the urgency for firms to engage on recent political and social issues — such as Black Lives Matter, diversity, and climate change — rather than just standing by the sidelines. We will also delve into the options for women and minorities who are working in locations and companies with restrictive reproductive rights policies. Our panel, to be announced, will consist of experts who will address women’s health and reproductive rights, activists, attorneys, HR professionals and a business ethicist.
